We started The Right To Shower because we believe access to cleanliness if a fundamental human right.
Americans experiencing homelessness lack access to everyday necessities and services — including showers. This makes it all too easy for them to be “othered”, rejected, and unseen by society, compromising their sense of dignity and their chance to feel included in the community.
We believe no one should be denied access to cleanliness. Free showers should be made accessible to those living on the streets - because one shower can contribute to improving health & well-being and restoring one’s dignity in their community.
Right now, 550,000 people are experiencing homelessness and have limited or no access to the everyday services many of us take for granted, including a shower.
We’re working to fix that.
We’ve crafted a range of products with the absolute best ingredients, sourced responsibly and formulated with care. And we’re using the profits to help ensure that everyone has access to a shower every day.
We were built as a social enterprise, to be a brand that is sustainable and able to continue to give back over time. We commit 30% of our profits to mobile shower initiatives that help people currently experiencing homelessness.
Meaning when you use The Right To Shower, you’re helping to give all the dignity, hope, strength and joy that can come from a single shower. So you can do good, while feeling good.
We’ve teamed up with Lava Mae to help us achieve this ambition. Lava Mae brings critical services to the streets – delivered with an unexpected level of care we call Radical Hospitality – to rekindle dignity and hope for people experiencing homelessness through their Mobile Hygiene Service, Pop-Up Care Villages and buildIt toolkits. The core tenets of their business are Humanity, Innovation and Collaboration.
Wrench was the Head Pit Technician for one of the biggest names in motoracing. He has travelled the world, racing in North and South America, Europe and the East Asia.
He’s also living on the streets. After a sudden stroke in 2005, he was unable to work after a lifetime of building engines, and lost his home. Which means, along with 550,000 other Americans, he often has nowhere to shower. We’re working to change that.
To make a difference, we need to do it together. We’ve met some amazing folks who have brought their passion and kindness to the streets. They’ve helped to deliver the care Lava Mae calls ‘Radical Hospitality’ to our houseless neighbors, helping rekindle dignity, restore a sense of well-being, and unlock the opportunity that comes with being clean.
To help inform and guide our long-term commitment to this cause, we convened a coalition of advocates and experts working on the frontlines of homelessness. Organizations included Brooklyn Community Services, Bombas, Burnes Center on Poverty and Homelessness at the University of Denver, Greyston, Habitat for Humanity International, Heartland Alliance, Hospitality House, Lava Mae, Mark Brand Inc., and Miracle Messages. Together, we developed a set of goals and principles that we will advocate for to ensure we continue on a path towards a future where everyone experiencing homelessness is cared for and supported.
